 Additional food

Seeds should be supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables(70/30). Offer organic vegetables and fruit in small quantities: select dark yellow meaty or dark green leafy items such as sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkins, winter squash, broccoli, parsley, spinach, mango or papaya. NEVER give your parrot avocado as it is toxic for your bird. You can add Tidymix dry vegetable and fruit to your bundle on our website.

[For birds with suspected iron-storage disease: Avoid citrus fruits, tomatoes, kiwi, strawberries and other foods containing vitamin C. Avoid grapes, currants, raisins, liver, red meat, egg yolk or dark green vegetables such as spinach, which may contain high levels of iron.]

The pluses of pellets:

  1. Skin and Feather Health.
  2. No vitamins are needed.
  3. Probiotics and prebiotics support digestive health.
  4. A balanced, nutritionally complete food.
  5. Tasty flavor and enticing smells which encourages a parrot to eat.
  6. Provide less of a mess in comparison to seeds.

How to convert your parrot to pellets:

  1. Start with introducing some new vegetables and other foods before introducing pellets.
  2. Begin with a mixture of old and new food. Gradually increasing the amount of new food over a 7 to 10-day period.
  3. Always maintain fresh drinking water for your pet bird.
  4. You should monitor your bird's body weight throughout the conversion period.
  5. Experiment with different kinds of pellets.
  6. Eat the new food by yourself in front of a cage.
  7. Try to choose a pellet with few or no artificial colors or flavors.
  8. Try moistening the pellets, perhaps with warm water.
  9. Try hand-feeding the pellets so your bird thinks they are a treat.
  10. Never underestimate the effects of positive reinforcement. Watch your bird, and if you see it take a pellet into its beaks, tell a parrot what a fabulous, smart and special birdie it really is.
  11. Be patient. For stubborn birds, the gradual shift may take months rather than weeks.

It can take time. But as a result you will have a happy, healthy parrot on a well-balanced diet!
